My family came to America as part of the Irish diaspora fleeing the Great Hunger in the mid 19th century. It was common – especially on the West Coast – for a family to be on the verge of disappearing forever. They would have sold everything; even the hinges on their front door in order to buy passage to America for one family member. One family member and the hope that their family name could live.
